To understand the differences between App Types and Individual App Registrations, or Individual and Overall Statistics collected by Application Manager, one first needs to understand the way in which Application Manager organises it’s data.
App Catalogue: a catalogue of different types of web applications
Application Manager receives requests from multiple remote web applications, those requests can be grouped by the type of application that it’s receiving stats from.
Application Manager will automatically identify the type of application it is receiving data from, based in the information it has received. Application Manager will then use that information to populate a catalogue of different application types. Any statistics it has then received will be added to the application type’s list of available statistics.
Other information about different app types included version information and links to documentation. Whenever new stats are received from a remote host, Application Manager can identify the version of that application type and will update the record within it’s App Catalogue accordingly. Each type of app within the App Catalogue will then have a detailed list of each different version, as detected by Application Manager.
Individual App Registrations: how this is different from app types
When Application Manager receives stats from a remote host, the type of application sending the stats is not the only thing that is determined; the owner of that particular instance of application is also determined. Application Manager works on the assumption that each time it receives statistics from a certain type of application, multiple copies of that type of application may be operating and publishing stats.
Application Manager will determine the owner of the particular instance of application it has received stats from, based on the domain, IP address or license key. If Application Manager has not received stats from this type of application with the same combination of domain, IP address and license key before, and new App Registration record is created. Any stats received from this particular instance of application in future will then update the corresponding app registration record’s statistics.
Differences between Individual and Overall Statistics
Application Manager dynamically adds new statistics to a list of available statistics for each type of application in it’s App Catalogue, each time new statistics are received. If a statistic has been received by Application Manager, which is new for the type of application sending the statistics, Application Manager will create a new statistic record for this, and associate it to the app type within the App Catalogue.
Equally, whenever Application Manager receives stats, the owner of those stats is determined, and that statistical data is then associated to an App Registration record for that particular app instance.
The statistical data is stored in the App Registration record, with each value linking to a certain type of statistic for that type of application. Meaning, each type of application has a list of different available statistics, which link to the respective statical values in each Individual App Registration’s record.
Both individual and overall statistics are grouped by App Type (i.e. a record within the App Catalogue). Individual Statistics are then also grouped by App Instance (i.e. a record within the App Registrations table).
Individual Statistics: these are the statistics produced by an individual instance of an application.
Overall Statistics: these are a total of all individual statistical values for that particular statistic type. Please note: certain instances of an application can have their statistics removed from overall totals. This is either explicitly set for that particular app instance or based on a restriction set by the authentication key used by that registered application when publishing the stats.
